Mount Baker

Mount Baker is an active volcano in the western Cascades, just south of the Canadian Border. This dynamic range offers an incredible array of day hikes and over-night excursions. These walks range from a gentle stroll along a roaring glacier-fedc river to a ridge-top journey offers majestic views of anient volcanic ranges.

This one-hour journey of discovery travels to high alpine lakes, along ancient volcanic ridges, into old growth forests and to peaks with views into the distant past. Flowers, flowing waters and the songs of nature are just some of the pleasures encountered in this vast wilderness that was trust from the earth, then carved by time.

The five short walks highlighted in the production are found on and near the north slopes of Mt. Baker in northwest Washington. Here, gentle joys unite with the remnants of the area's tumultuous past to create a unique and amazingly accessible landscape. Each walk offers its own unique beauty from start to finish.

Chain Lakes Loop travels flower-covered volcanic slopes before it dives down to the shores of sheltered lakes cut by long-gone glaciers. It rises again to offer dynamic views of the North Cascades and a descent through meadows of bounding streams.



Winchester Mountain begins at two small lakes nestled in a high pass, then climbs to a sharp peak with 180-degree views of the jagged peaks of the Mt. Baker Wilderness.



Lake Ann below Mount Shuksan
Lake Ann follows a sparkling creed down a soft valley, then climbs to a pristine lake beneath the glaciers of Mount Shuksan, whose ridges and spires are descendants of stone formed beneath an ancient ocean.



Elbow Lake crosses a mighty river before it climbs through an old-growth forest filled with the songs of birds. A twist up the gentle incline leads to the lake's gentle fir-covered shores.



Ptarmigan Ridge traverses a rocky land of volcanic views. This high-country walk journeys across ancient lava flows onto the high slopes to a close view of one of Mt. Baker's glaciers.

These wonderful trails offer a multitude of joys to a diversity of people, including scientists from Western Washington University who speak from their hearts about Mount Baker's astounding geology, plants, and insects, as well as their own love of this dynamic wilderness.

Mount Baker's trails can be reached from the Mount Baker Highway (State Route 542) in northwest Washington. They are approximately two hours from Seattle and one hour from Vancouver, British Colombia. From I-5, drive east from Exit 255 (Sunset Drive/Mt Baker Highway) in Bellingham.
